Young Christian Martyr

DELAROCHE, Paul (b. 1797, Paris, d. 1859, Paris)
Young Christian Martyr 1855
Oil on canvas, 171 x 148 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Delaroche`s wife, Louise Vernet, died in 1845.

In this picture, her features float on the dark waters of the Tiber, lit by the halo of sainthood.

For a while his pictures were totally out of favour, but his work is once again being treated seriously.
